Music Magazine Case Study

Target Audience
The main age range that read NME magazine is 25 and are mainly males. The target audience is also based on people who are interested in puck rock/indie music genre. This is shown from the indie style of the magazine cover shown to the right.

o   History of the magazine
NME is a British music journalism magazine published since March 1952. The music genre that NME associates with is mainly rock, alternative and indie music. The magazine has made some changed over time as during the period 1972 to 1976 it used to be based on gonzo journalism but slowly associated itself with punk rock.NME started off as a music newspaper but gradually changed into a music magazine format in the 1980’s. This modern magazine grew in popularity and became locatable even on the internet when a web page, NME.com, was launched in 1996.

Style of the Magazine
The style of NME magazines can vary depending on the person / band on the front page. To the right shows two, one of which is bright with lots of colour, and the other is mainly in black & white with bright headings. However both still come across as the indie / puck rock style that NME base their music genre around. The Vaccines magazine has a black and white effect for the main image to emphasis the indie / retro style of the band. The Arctic Monkeys magazine is a lot brighter to but still retro. The style of NME is overall quite modern and directed towards 16 to around 25. The cover lines of the magazine always tends to be the brightest colour of the whole magazine cover to stand out and grab attention from the audience.

  1. This is a solid post and clearly your own work which is good. I do think that you can add to this and discuss NME in a bit more detail in the modern day. They have diversified greatly over the past few years - TV, radio, web, tours and concerts etc. This is something worth mentioning and also worth discussing is the fact that NME is now a free magazine and why they have done this.
