Evaluation: Institutions

For my magazine I wanted it to be unique and not very mainstream such as magazines like ‘Q’. I tried to base my magazine around the style and look of ‘Clash magazine’ and others like, i-D and Wonderland magazine. The reason I wanted to make my magazine similar to Clash was because of the music genre which is quite alternative and less mainstream, which is the type of music I talked about and included in my magazine. Clash is the only magazine published by Clash Magazine Ltd which makes them independent, yet is more successful than NME published by IPC. Wonderland is also an independently published magazine, and i-D magazine is published by Vice Media.

As my magazine isn’t a mainstream magazine I wouldn’t want big companies like, IPC, Bauer, Dennis, Future etc. to publish my magazine. Instead of going with a big magazine publisher I’d rather go with an independent one like Clash also did, or Vice Media since it seems to be more targeted at my audience. Vice media has a lot to offer, publishing magazine is new to Vice as they only used to be a magazine until they developed into several things such as film production, a website and a record label, but recently became a publishing imprint.

The advantages of self-publishing means that you have all control over your magazine and don’t need to worry about things such as money and keeping up with the big company. However, the disadvantage would be that it is yours and yours only responsibility to get the magazine out there and get it heard about. Therefore, I would want my magazine to be published by Vice Media because it fits my target audience as its to do with fashion, music, film and arty photography which is what inspired my magazine, plus the company isn’t as big as publishers such as IPC and Bauer. I would also have an online version of my magazine and enable the opportunity to subscribe to the magazine online.
